Tom Wood drove the race of his life to win the final round and becomes the 2014 LGM Champion. Even after 6 different winners, Wood leading the series had not won a round, but that all changed yesterday. Lorcan Hanafin achieved his first pole after the heats with Kiern Jewiss on 2. The race started as usual, under the bridge, Finlay Bunce & Mario Mills lost out being spun around in the pack, Hanafin took an early lead , with Wood, but Zac Robertson made an excellent start and the Fusion freight train was complete, Jonny Edgar, Teddy Wilson & Robertson breezed past Hanafin and Wood looking as if they would break away. Jewiss, Lewis Thompson & Joe Turney sorted out there differences and also past Hanafin & Wood dropping them down the order. As the first three pushed hard to make a gap, it was the raw speed of Thompson who on his own, bridged the gap by lap 7,
as soon as Thompson arrived he made it look easy passing all 3 in front, slowing the pace a little, allowing Turney to follow through. Thompson was quite happy in the front with Turney & Edgar pursuing. As with all cadet races that are close in comes down to the final lap. Edgar makes a lunge for the lead which he then takes the defences line, backing everyone up. Wood at this point is down in 7th. A long the back straight, all the drivers go for the inside to look after there position apart from Wood who takes the open wide line, unbelievably keeping his momentum manages to move from 7th to first in one manoeuvre. Total chaos erupts behind with karts everywhere, Wilson & Turney touch and Wilsons championship dream is dashed with an off. Thompson gets pushed on to the kerb, with Robertson finding his way through, followed by Edgar. Josh Rafferty gets a lucky break missing the action and slotting into 4th.
But the day belongs to Wood, the race was not going his way, but one of the passes of the year makes him the Seventh different round winner and Champion 2014. Fastest lap was Robertson, with top privateer drivers Ben Wooldridge & Clayton Ravenscroft finishing 10th & 11th respectively.
Six different drivers have now won a round of the 2014 LGM with Kiern Jewiss becoming the seventh round victor. In the heats it was Jonny Edgar that did a blistering job of securing pole position, Tom Wood who seems to be back on form, placed his kart on grid 2. Lewis Thomson had 3 out 3 fastest laps in the heats lining up grid 5, with other championship contenders Teddy Wilson and Zac Robertson, 11th & 12th respectively. The early lead was taken by Edgar and Wood but these were not to get away from the pack of 15 leading drivers. The battle was the usual LGM quality, with many drivers trying to pull away and also jockey for position. Working his way up Thompson took the lead and made a dash for it pulling six kart lengths into the bottom corner. His lead was short lived as the very next lap the crew behind soon pulled him back in where he got shuffled back to 8th in one corner !. With championship leader Wilson making little progress, Robertson, was and briefly took the lead. With bad driver information from the circuit, there was no display of how long was left, Jewiss then made his move and pulled clear of Robertson, Wood & Thompson.
Not knowing it was the last lap, again due to the information not being displayed, Jewiss took a surprised chequered flag with the rest in pursuit. With Jewiss’s Skill its hard to think he hasn’t won a round earlier, its even harder for Wood, who now takes the lead in the series without even winning around !, and with 4 different makes of kart in the first 4 places, the last round at PFI is going to be a stunner, and we can not wait. Ben Wooldridge won the privateers cup again finishing a creditable 10th overall, with Joe Willoughby 2nd and Clayton Ravenscroft 3rd. Jonny Edgar built his points up with the Fastest lap.
